A 2.5 GHz AMD Turion II Ultra mobile processor, 4 GB RAM, and 500 GB Serial ATA-150 7,200 rpm hard drive come standard on the HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx. The features that are designed to impress are the large display, Webcam, microphone, assortment of connections, and ability to play Blu-ray discs. Users should make sure that they are not watching their Blu-rays on battery power, because they will not get far due to this laptop’s poor battery life. Subpar multitasking ability and lack of Bluetooth are also rather disappointing on this laptop that carries a $670.00 price tag.
Though it may seem foolish to have expectations that a 17-inch LCD screen laptop with a graphics chip and 7,200 rpm hard drive would have a long lasting battery, some may hold out hope. These folks will be disappointed to learn that the HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx has a battery that lasts less than three hours on average. However, one look at that beautiful, large screen with LED backlighting will turn their frowns upside down.
The 2.5 GHz AMD processor used in this laptop is of the older, more power hungry, variety. All of that power is needed in order to watch HD videos and listen through the Altec-Lansing stereo speakers. The processor does not compare to the Intel Core i3, but whether users will notice any lag will depend on how much they multi-task on this device. The Webcam and microphone are nice added components. There are a lot of ports and connections but noticeably missing are a mini-FireWire port, TV tuner, Bluetooth, and modem. Integrated Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi are included connectivity options.
The large keyboard includes a full number pad, but the keys are a little squishy. The touch pad is covered in chrome which does not permit the fingers to glide smoothly. There is also a touch strip above the keyboard, allowing users to control volume, audio play, and Wi-Fi radio. HP is even so nice as to include a tiny remote control that can be housed in the ExpressCard slot of this laptop.
The HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx has some drawbacks, the most major of which is its poor battery life. Other disappointments are the lack of Bluetooth, modem, and poor multitasking skills. However, these are all forgotten when the consumer looks at the 17 inch LCD screen with LED backlighting. In addition to that beautiful sight, a microphone, Webcam, and ability to play Blu-Ray discs are other pluses.
